Thanks, Paul. And I certainly agree with you: Wake In Fright serves up a few truths about Australian culture like a punch in the face, doesn't it.

You know, I'm trying to think of a more arresting film and I'm having trouble... Apocalypse Now, Midnight Cowboy, Reservoir Dogs come to mind. But, for me, they don't surpass Wake In Fright, perhaps sitting just so very slightly beneath it. Maybe Goodfellas pips it at the post... In any case, I'd put money on Coppola and Tarantino having being secret fans of Wake In Fright. Just a thought...

Yes, nice piece indeed. For me, it's one of the finest Australian genre films and I think its strength is the sheer honesty in which it reflects an aspect of Australian culture, without descending to the Bazza Mackenzie 'Ozploitation' caricature.

Sincerely appreciate your comment, Thomas.

That moment, in marked contrast to the rest of the 'manic' tragic scenes of the film, struck me as the most resonantly quiet one. Quite an amazing contrast set up from the film's outset.

Thanks again

This is a great piece Justin and as you know from the article and review that I wrote, I share your enthusiasm. I really like that you addressed the representation of the lone Indigenous man as I think that is important to recognise that Wake in Fright doesn't exclude representations of Indigenous people but it actually visually acknowledges that they are marginalised.

Cheers
